PSA Antwerp receives new hybrid straddle carriers from Kalmar by vessel

Today, Kalmar delivered 18 new hybrid straddle carriers by ship to PSA Antwerp. Their arrival at the Noordzee Terminal marks the next step in the modernization of terminal equipment and contributes to more sustainable port operations as well as stable and predictable service for customers.

The delivery includes 10 hybrid straddle carriers capable of stacking containers up to three rows high, and 8 hybrid straddle carriers that can stack up to four rows high. Straddle carriers play a crucial role in daily container handling at the terminal and have a direct impact on operational continuity. The new machines replace older diesel models and will be deployed at the North Sea Terminal.

Kalmar’s hybrid technology pairs a diesel engine with a battery system that captures and reuses energy. Compared to conventional diesel machines, this results in lower fuel consumption and reduced CO₂ emissions. By replacing the older machines, PSA Antwerp reduces its annual emissions by approximately 1,180 tons of CO₂.

In addition to environmental benefits, the new straddle carriers also increase operational reliability, as they require less maintenance than the older machines. These updates do not affect the terminal’s overall container-handling capacity.

Jurgen De Wachter, General Manager at PSA Antwerp saud: “The arrival of these new straddle carriers is a clear example of how we are modernizing our terminal step by step while working toward our climate objectives. By replacing older machines with hybrid alternatives, we reduce our emissions and simultaneously increase the reliability of our daily operations".
Damien Cols, Director Global Customers at Kalmar said:This delivery by ship underscores our collaboration with PSA Antwerp. Our hybrid straddle carriers are designed for intensive container operations and help terminal operators reduce their environmental impact within existing operational constraints.”

According to PSA Antwerp, the deployment of hybrid straddle carriers fits within the ongoing modernization program for horizontal container transport. Hybrid technology is consistently chosen as the best available solution to reduce emissions from heavy terminal operations .
